Greed, lust, jealousy, anger… such vices couldn’t possibly have created Modern Europe, could they? This course will examine some of the major events in Western European history to show the public ramifications of private impropriety and personal weaknesses. We will focus on the evolution of Western Europe, from 1100 through 1700, and discuss the role of scandal, vice and sin in the evolution of Europe. By examining the often-seedy flipside of European History students will learn to interrogate sources, question historiographic conventions, develop opinions and argue ideas with conviction—in short, to become historians.
