This is a course in early-modern European history beginning with the Medieval Black Death and ending in 1789 with the French Revolution. It will not only introduce you to the events of the past, but also to the practice of history, which is the analysis of change over time. We will be exploring the past from the perspective of intellectual and cultural history, which means that our focus will be on the ideas and values of the past. Specifically, this course is structured around the emergence of “modern” individualism and the problem of attaining certainty in a constantly changing and uncertain world.
