This course will examine the profound social and cultural changes that occurred within Europe between the Black Death and the French Revolution with particular attention to the cultural exchanges occurred as European influence spread around the world.  The course will begin with the decline of medieval Europe and the social and religious changes that swept the continent after the Black Death.  It will continue to examine what happened when Europeans brought their new customs to places that had no previous contact with European society such as Russia and the Americas.  It will conclude with an examination of the Enlightenment and its influence on the American and French Revolutions as well as Russian society.
