HS-081-07 Modern History I

fall semester

Dave McCowin

This course examines Europe in a global context from roughly 1450 to 1800.  We will consider not only the increasing European contact and interaction with the rest of the world, but also investigate more seemingly insular events in Europe by comparison to similar developments elsewhere.  Through an analysis of political, economic, social, and cultural factors, students will appreciate the complexity of the global era of revolution that concludes the course.  Finally, students will be introduced to the historian’s craft through study of both primary and secondary sources and the ways in which historians “read” each.
