This course examines the political, social, cultural, and economic development of Europe from the Black Death of the medieval period through the Atlantic Revolutions of the late eighteenth century. Specific attention will be drawn to the interconnectedness between Europe and various regions of the world via the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans as the course explores the changing ways in which Europeans looked at themselves, at the world in which they lived, and the world in which they increasingly encountered; these connections were characterized by encounters, economic development, and intellectual exchange.
