HS-059 Islam and Global Modernities I

fall semester

Prof. Prasannan Parthasarathi

This course surveys the making of the modern world from the perspective of Eurasia, from the long-distance links forged by medieval Islam to the global context of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century. Along the way, we will challenge common geographical (mis)conceptions of "East versus West" in historical narratives and find out where they come from and how they have changed. While emphasizing global conjunctions in history, this course will highlight the interaction of Europe and Asia in the period before 1800. Topics to be examined will include trade, religion, ecological change, migration, and warfare.
