Welcome to the Boston College German Department Web site.
The German Department at is a small, student-focused department in the College of Arts and Sciences that provides courses in German language, culture, business and history from the Middle Ages to the present. In addition, the Department offers opportunities for contact with German-speaking Europe and for study abroad in Austria and Germany, as well as the possibility of teaching in Germany following graduation.
The German Department is known for its "students first" attitude, as the faculty members provide personal attention to students' needs, and foster a positive learning experience within the classroom. German Studies offers not only a major, a minor, an interdisciplinary minor and an honors program, but also numerous other activities for learning about German culture. These include the Stammtisch, which is a weekly meeting place where students can sit and speak German with others, and the German Club, which is a student-run organization that provides activities for the students throughout the year.
Finally, the German Department is well known for the impressive success rate of its students who have applied for Fulbright post-graduate scholarships in Germany. In fact, thirteen students were accepted in 2007, which is believed to be the highest number of Fulbrights ever awarded to one single university for one country!
