Program Description

gateway scholars program

The Gateway Scholars Program for STEM was established in 2012 to increase the diversity among our science degree graduates. This program is designed to support First Generation freshman and sophomores through the foundational courses in biology and chemistry that are required for many science related majors or programs. Gateway is funded by the Provost Office and jointly administered by the Learning to Learn Office and the Biology and Chemistry Departments. Students in the Gateway Scholars Program are connected to a faculty advisor in the Biology or Chemistry Department and enrolled in science classes that provide for one-on-one interactions with science faculty and teaching assistants.

The program provides for very early “tethering” of students to the science departments and faculty. At the completion of year two, we hope students are prepared to take the next step toward their professional development. This may be working in a faculty lab doing research or taking on an internship in a variety of science or clinical disciplines.
