BC Fine Arts Department
The Boston College Fine Arts Department is located in Devlin Hall. The building
houses Art studios as well as faculty offices, a slide library of about 100,000
slides, and classrooms of various sizes equipped for audiovisual projection
for art history classes. There are studios for painting and drawing, as well
as facilities for teaching photography and filmmaking in Devlin Hall. Additional
studios for ceramics and senior studios are available in two nearby carriage
houses.
Bapst Art Library
The Bapst Art Library provides
resources in Art and Art History for
the B.C. community. The collection
at Bapst includes the major print and
electronic resources in Fine Arts,
and the reference staff supports the
research of the Fine Arts Department
and the University at large. Bapst
art resources include all major art databases,
an extensive reference
collection, approximately 200 serials,
many CD-ROMs, and over 27,000
Fine Arts volumes. Extensive Internet
resources include access to the
AMICO Image Library, which will include
250,000 digital images by
the end of 2003.
McMullen Museum Of
Art
As a university museum, the
McMullen mounts interdisciplinary
exhibitions distinct from those
in public museums. Through the
Museum, the expertise of Boston
College faculty from a variety of academic
disciplines reaches students
as well as the broader academic
community in New England and the
public at large. The Museum displays
its notable permanent collection
and mounts exhibitions of international
scholarly importance from all
periods and cultures of the history
of art. Exhibitions are accompanied
by scholarly catalogues and free
lectures, symposia, concerts, films,
and theatrical productions. Previous
exhibitions of note include Memory
and the Middle Ages, J.M.W. Turner
and the Romantic Vision of the Holy
Land and the Bible, Saints and Sinners:
Caravaggio and the Baroque Image,
and Edvard Munch: Psyche, Symbol
and Expression, and have received
as many as 66,000 visitors.
Media Center
The Media Department at the O'Neill
Library holds a collection of over 9,000
feature films and documentaries.
Visual Resources
Collection
The Boston College Fine Arts Visual Resources Collection is a departmental resource
comprising over 100,000 35-millimeter slides and a rapidly growing number of
digital images of works of art. The collection is developed and maintained to
support the teaching activities of the Fine Arts faculty.
The collection's offices and slide library are located in Devlin Hall, room 401C. The slide library is open, by appointment, to faculty from other Boston College departments, and to students preparing presentations in upper-level Fine Arts seminars.
