Eric Strauss, Ph.D.
Program Director
Dr. Strauss is a Research Associate professor in the Biology Department. He is the senior author of one of the nation's leading Biology textbooks and the host of the accompanying television series Biology Alive! He has been the principal investigator on a number of groundbreaking studies, including a study of the conservation biology of piping plovers and a study of the Lyme Disease system conducted in conjunction with the Harvard School of Public Health.

Peter Auger, Ph.D.
Dr. Auger is a faculty member of the Biology Department. He is also an associate at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and has recently retired from Barnstable High School, where he taught for 30 years. Dr. Auger was recognized by the National Association of Biology Teachers as the 2002 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, and in 2006 he was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Henry David Thoreau Foundation, which recognizes his outstanding achievement and lasting contributions in support of student intellectual and personal development and leadership potential.

Charlie Lord, Esq.
Mr. Lord is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Urban Ecology Institute. The non-profit organization is comprised of a group of scientists, educators and attorneys who research urban ecosystems, provide information to urban residents and policymakers, and work with Boston public schools to protect and restore urban natural resources before they are lost. Mr. Lord was also the co-founder of Alternatives for Community and Environment, an environmental law and justice center in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He is also a part-time professor in the Biology Dept.

Jess Schmierer
Program Coordinator

Jess is a recent graduate of Boston College where she earned a B.A. in Biology. With a minor in the Environmental Studies Program, she gained research experience by conducting an independent study on nesting Osprey on Cape Cod, she also spent time researching Eastern Box Turtles and Diamondback Terrapins. She has worked as an intern for Sailors for the Sea, a non-profit organization that is raising environmental awareness within the sailing community. At Sailors for the Sea, she helped to develop environmental curriculum for junior sailing programs as well as establish "Clean Regattas" across the country. Jess also worked for an environmental consulting firm where she assisted in the production of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment reports.  These, along with her experiences at BC, have given her insight into the opportunities that are available in different fields, including environmental justice, education, and behavioral research.
