Eight of the eleven courses for the Communication major satisfy requirements. With the three remaining electives, majors are encouraged to develop a concentration (sometimes referred to as an area of emphasis). So, for example, a major interested in journalism might take some combination of CO227--Broadcasting Writing, CO230--News Writing, CO231--Feature Writing, and CO233--Advanced Journalism, CO249--Communication Law, or CO250--Mass Communication Ethics.
There is no formal list of concentrations and majors are encouraged to select electives that meet their own needs. Many majors have developed innovative areas of emphasis that include courses in advertising, public relations, and digital communication. Other majors will opt for a more traditional concentration in advertising, audio or video production, journalism, or public relations.
