Sarah Schulman is the author of 9 novels, including After Dolores, People in Trouble, Rat Bohemia and The Child, as well as 3 non-fiction works, My American History: Gay and Lesbian Life During the Reagan/Bush Years, Stagestruck: Theater, AIDS and the Marketing of Gay America, and Ties that Bind: Familial Homophobia and Its Consequences, and several plays including Carson McCullers. Schulman has been both a Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellow, and among her many awards she has been a two-time winner of the American Library Association Gay and Lesbian Book Award.
One of the earliest chroniclers of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S, Schulman was an active member of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), and co-founded the activist group Lesbian Avengers. With filmmaker Jim Hubbard, Schulman founded in 1987 The New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film Festival. In 2001 Schulman and Hubbard founded the ACT UP Oral History Project, which has received over half a million dollars in grants from the Ford and Warhol Foundations. This fall the ACT UP Oral History Project will premiere as part of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and Harvard Art Museum’s exhibition "ACT UP New York: Activism, Art, and the AIDS Crisis, 1987–1993."
