Established in 1970, the Communication Department has become the largest undergraduate major at Boston College. Over the past thirty-six years, the department has grown from three to twenty full-time faculty, from a handful of students to more than one thousand majors, and from an orientation primarily devoted to teaching the composition and delivery of speeches to the broad gamut of theories and methods encompassed by Communication.
Important dates in department history:
- 1963--Speech program created in the School of Education
- 1970--Speech Communication and Theatre Department moves to the College of Arts and Sciences
- 1989--Name change to Communication and Theater Department
- 1993--Communication and Theater splits into two separate departments
- 2000--Communication passes English to become the largest major in the College of Arts & Sciences
- 2002--Communication Department moves to 21 Campanella Way
