Dr. Jayasundera obtained his B.S. degree in Chemistry from UMass., followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Yale University. After completing two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions, the first at St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Hospital and the next at Brown University, he joined the Chemistry Department at Boston College as the Assistant Director of the NMR Center in August 2011. Since then, he successfully achieved his M.B.A. from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, and took over as Director of the NMR Center in August 2016.

Dr. Jayasundera’s research training was focused on the multi-faceted field of protein NMR, including extensive dynamics and interaction studies between proteins and small molecules, as well as the three-dimensional structure determination of proteins using modern NMR methods.

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center

Five Varian high-field NMR spectrometers are maintained and operated in the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center in the Boston College Chemistry Department: a 600 MHz VNMRS, a 500 MHz VNMRS, a 500 MHz INOVA, a 400 MHz VNMRS, and a 400 MHz MR-400. All the spectrometers are equipped with pulsed-field gradients and variable-temperature controllers, and are running the most up-to-date Varian VNMRJ software on Dell T3400 computers in the Linux Centos 6.7 operating system. Additionally, all the NMR systems except for the INOVA 500 are equipped with an automatic probe tuning and matching ProTune® accessory.

The probes available in the Center allow NMR users to observe most spin-active nuclei and perform nearly all state-of-the-art 1D, 2D, and multi-dimensional liquids NMR experiments. A combination of on-line and open-access reservation schemes are used to ensure the most efficient use of the instruments.

An additional Dell workstation running the same software as the spectrometers (as well as a variety of other data processing software programs) allow users to process their data to prepare reports and presentation graphics in the facility. Users can also remotely access and transfer data to their personal computers within the Boston College network with ease. Other remote spectrometer access options (such as VNC) are also in place for teaching and maintenance purposes. A large selection of printing and plotting devices are available in the facility for student use, and all NMR data is remotely stored in back-up servers by the IT specialists at Boston College.

VNMRS 600 (nmr19)
Manufactured by Varian NMR Inc. (serial number MR0904W032) and including a 11.745 Tesla 54 mm bore Varian Premium Shielded long-hold magnet, the spectrometer is driven by a Dell T3400 computer running Linux Centos 6.7 and Agilent VJ 4.2 software. The 4-channel spectrometer (2 HB, LB and 2 LB) is equipped with a z-axis Performa IV pulsed field gradient, direct-drive architecture, ProTune automated tune and match for high and low-band probe channels, and variable temperature control.

The spectrometer has a 600 MHz 1H-19F/15N-31P PFG AutoX DB NB probe (serial number MR0902W004) and a 600 MHz 1H{13C/15N} 5mm PFG automation-enabled triple-resonance probe (serial number MR0902W001).

VNMRS 500 (nmr18)
Manufactured by Varian NMR Inc. (serial number MR0908W023) and including a 11.7 Tesla 54 mm bore Varian Premium Shielded long-hold magnet (serial number 21058), the spectrometer is driven by a Dell T3400 computer running Linux Centos 6.7 and Agilent VJ 4.2 software. The dual channel spectrometer is equipped with a z-axis Performa IV pulsed field gradient, direct-drive architecture, ProTune automated tune and match for high and low-band probe channels, and variable temperature control.

The spectrometer has a 500 MHz1H-19F/15N-31P OneNMR PFG probe.

INOVA 500 MHz (nmr11)
Manufactured by Varian NMR Inc. (serial number UI500-S010837) and including an 11.744 Tesla 51 mm bore Oxford magnet (serial number 98619), the spectrometer is driven by a Dell T3400 computer running Linux Centos 6.7 and Agilent VJ 4.2 software. The spectrometer is equipped with x, y, and z-axis pulsed field gradients, waveform generators, and variable temperature control.

Probes include a 5 mm Varian 500 SW/PFG (z-gradient) 50-202 MHz Broadband probe (serial number P003607), a 5mm Varian 500 ID/PFG (x, y, z-gradients) 50-202 MHz Indirect Detection probe (serial number P003833), and a Varian 500 gHX 50-202 MHz Nano-probe (serial number P003580).

VNMRS 400 (nmr14)
Manufactured by Varian NMR Inc. (serial number MR0907W004) including a 9.395 Tesla actively shielded Oxford 400AS magnet (serial number M02807), the spectrometer is driven by a Dell T3400 computer running Linux Centos 6.7 and Agilent VJ 4.2 software. The dual channel spectrometer is equipped with a z-axis Performa IV pulsed field gradient, direct-drive architecture, ProTune automated tune and match for high and low-band probe channels and variable temperature control.

Probes include a 5mm Varian g4NUC (1H/19F/13C/31P) Auto-NMR probe (serial number P008353), and a 1H-19F/15N-31P 5mm PFG AutoX DB NB 400 MHz probe (serial number MR0902W042).

MR-400 (nmr13)
Manufactured by Varian NMR Inc. (serial number MR0905W019) and including a 9.395 Tesla 54 mm bore Varian Premium Shielded long-hold magnet, the spectrometer is driven by a Dell T3400 computer running Linux Centos 6.7 and Agilent VJ 4.2 NMR software. The dual channel spectrometer is equipped with a z-axis Performa IV pulsed field gradient, direct-drive architecture, ProTune automated tune and match for high and low-band probe channels, and variable temperature control.

The spectrometer has a 400 MHz1H-19F/15N-31P PFG AutoX DB NB probe.

The University completed a $1.5 million overhaul of the Center for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in fall 2009, with support from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Energy. Working in the facility are from left, the CNMR's former Director, Dr. John Boylan, and Chemistry graduate students Jamie O'Brien (background), Laura Brozek (foreground), and David Moebius.

EMX-Plus EPR System
The latest addition to the NMR Center is a new departmental EMX-Plus EPR spectrometer from the Bruker Biospin Corporation. Complete with a cryogen free VT system that allows the samples to reach temperatures as low as 10K, this instrument provides crucial support to research groups working on high-spin metal complexes containing iron or cobalt centers. Along with an ER 073 10” double-yoke magnet, this system has a Hall field controller and signal channel module that are both digital and ultra-high resolution, an X-band, solid state low noise microwave bridge and a high sensitivity probehead with an optical window for running CW-EPR experiments in X-band. The system runs on Xenon 1.1 acquisition software in a Linux environment, with WIN-EPR, WIM-SimFonia as well as the XSophe software package for the simulation of EPR spectra.
