John S. Dacey received a B.A. in social science from Binghamton University and an M. A. T. in social studies and a Ph.D. in developmental and educational psychology from Cornell University. He joined the faculty of Boston College in 1966 and recently retired as Professor in the Developmental and Educational Psychology Program. He teaches courses in adolescent and adult development and the psychology of interpersonal relations. He has a small practice as a psychotherapist, licensed in Massachusetts. He is the author of 13 books on the subjects of anxiety, creativity, and family relations. He also serves as a lay minister in Lexington, as Director of Resources at the Unitarian Urban Ministry in Roxbury, and as mentor of the BC Bloggers Program.

Dacey has three adult children: Julie (novelist and Director of Spread the Bread), Jennifer (Assistant Professor of Public Health, Boston College School of Nursing), and Kristen (photographer and Director of His wife Linda is Professor of Math Education at Lesley University. They have nine wonderful grandchildren. Besides telling them tall tales, Dacey enjoys designing video games, gardening, sailing, flying a small plane, and golf.
