Biology Department

Undergraduate Research Courses in Biology

The following is a listing of 3-credit and 6-credit undergraduate research courses.  All courses must have a designated BC faculty mentor.  Students should register for their faculty mentor's section of a research course.  Additional sections can be generated if a particular faculty member does not already have a section listed on the University registration system.

One semester of a research course is sufficient to satisfy the department's advanced lab requirement.  Two semesters of undergraduate research satisfies BOTH an upper-division elective AND the advanced lab requirement.  Additional research courses are considered electives toward graduation but do not satisfy additional biology major requirements.

BIOLOGY MAJORS - RESEARCH COURSES (3 credits)

Courses should not be repeated.  Students will probably not take all courses as they advance through the sequence of research courses.

  • BI 461 - Undergraduate Research I (fall)
  • BI 462 - Undergraduate Research II (spring)
  • BI 465 - Advanced Undergraduate Research I (fall)
  • BI 466 - Advanced Undergraduate Research II (spring)
  • BI 467 - Biology Honors Thesis Research I (fall) - requires application and Dept. invitation
  • BI 468 - Biology Honors Thesis Research II (spring) - requires application and Dept. invitation
  • BI 475 - Senior Thesis Research I (fall)
  • BI 476 - Senior Thesis Research II (spring)

BIOCHEMISTRY MAJORS - RESEARCH COURSES

The two courses together satisfy the biochemistry lab requirement.

  • BI 463 - Research in Biochemistry I (fall)
  • BI 464 - Research in Biochemistry II (spring)

SCHOLAR OF THE COLLEGE RESEARCH PROGRAM (6 credits)

The Scholar of the College program is administered by the Dean's Office.

  • BI 499 - Advanced Independent Research (biology majors)
  • BI 498 - Advanced Independent Research in Biochemistry (biochemistry majors)

OFF-CAMPUS RESEARCH OPTIONS (3 credits)

These courses require both a BC mentor and a qualified off-campus mentor.  These courses do not require a lab fee.  Students enrolled in this sequence of courses are eligible to participate in the biology honors program and the undergraduate research poster session.

  • BI 470 - Undergraduate Research Investigations I (fall)
  • BI 471 - Undergraduate Research Investigations II (spring)
  • BI 472 - Advanced Undergraduate Research Investigations I (fall)
