Graduate Admission Requirements

  1. Bachelor's Degree:  Applicants for graduate training should have a bachelor's degree and undergraduate course work in calculus, physics, biochemistry, biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry.
  2. Statement of Purpose
  3. Official Academic Transcript(s):  Academic transcripts are required from all higher education institutions the student has studied at.  Academic transcripts not in English must be translated by an official translator.
  4. Three Letters of Recommendation:  Strong consideration is given to letters of recommendation particularly from faculty closely familiar with the applicant's undergraduate or post-baccalaureate research experience.
  5. GRE General Test and TOEFL:  All applicants, including those from foreign countries, must complete the Graduate Record Examination.  A GRE Subject examination is recommended but not required. Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve a score of 550 or better (paper-based test) a 213 or better (computer-based test), or a 79 or better (internet-based test, with a speaking/listening score higher than 20)on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).  Remember to enter the Boston College School Code of 3083 to ensure that your score report is sent to us, student copies or photocopies of TOEFL scores are not accepted. 
  6. Interview:  Some applicants will be required to speak with a member of our Admissions Committee.  Interviews will be conducted either over the phone, or if the applicant lives locally, on campus.

The application deadline for fall admission is January 2nd, but applications received after this date will be evaluated on a continual basis until April 15th.
