Film Series

Films are shown on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Lyons 301.  The film series is presented by the African and African Diaspora Studies Program and AADS core faculty member RĂ©gine Michelle Jean-Charles.

Fall 2008 Films

September 22nd:  Rosewood (1997)
  • Based on a true story of a Black Florida town burnt down in 1923
  • Director:  John Singleton
October 20th:  Sometimes in April (2005)
  • The story of two Hutu brothers during and after genocide and the different paths they take.
  • Director:  Raoul Peck
November 17th:  Bamako (2006)
  • The IMF and World Bank are put on trial in a courtyard in the capital of Mali.  Lawyers argue whether the institutions bear guilt for the current financial state of many poverty-stricken African countries.

Spring 2009 Films

January 26th:  The Rosa Parks Story (2002)
  • This film is an account of Rosa Parks' life and her historic act.

February 16th:  Daughters of the Dust (1991)
  • This film is set in the 1920s and provides a historical account of the Gullah culture of the south.

March 16th:  Le Malentendu Colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding) (2004)
  • Examining European colonialism in Africa through the prism of Christian evangelism, this film focuses in particular on the role of German missionaries in the 1904 genocide of the Herero people.

April 6th:  No!:  The Rape Documentary (2006)
  • "Riveting testimonials from Black women rape survivors...who defy victimization."
