SYNOPSIS: The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies, established
in 1986 at the Freie Universität Berlin and in the United States by the
Social Science Research Council (SSRC), promotes a new generation of young American
scholars with a specialized knowledge of modern and contemporary German and
European affairs. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation field research
as well as postdoctoral research leading to the completion of a monograph. Fellows
are selected by an international, interdisciplinary committee of scholars. The

SYNOPSIS: Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for emerging
scholars to complete work on projects related to the Getty Research Institute's
annual theme. The theme for 2005-2006 is Duration: the Persistence of Antiquity.
Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute, where they pursue
research to complete their dissertations or to expand them for publication.
Applications are welcome from scholars of all nationalities who are working
in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Predoctoral fellows are in residence
