What is the purpose of the research study?

The Diagnostic Geometry Assessment (DGA) project is a federally-funded research project. The DGA aims to develop a formative assessment that middle-school teachers can use to identify the misconceptions and degrees of understanding that their students hold in geometry. You can read about the details of the study at the DGA Research Study Page. Phase One and Phase Two are now complete. For Phase Three: Online Geometry Tests, middle school teachers will administer online geomtery tests to their students. The results of these administrations will be used to develop and evaluate the full DGA test.

What is required of me to participate?

To participate, you must agree to complete two requirements between October 11 and November 24. There is also a third, optional, requirement:

  1. Student Testing: You will administer one, two, or three online geometry tests to at least one classroom of students (approximately 20 students). You can choose to administer the test focusing on Shapes, Measurement, and/or Transformations. Each of these geometry tests contains four sub-tests of approximately ten questions each (40 questions total). We estimate that each test will take 60 minutes to complete. Thus, you should likely schedule two class periods for each test.

  2. Teacher Surveys: You will complete two online surveys. The first survey is a classroom assessment that asks you to assess each student that completed the online geometry tests as "below average, average, or above average" in geometry. You will also indicate students that you think might have misconceptions in mathematics. The second survey is an Exit Survey that asks you about your experiences with participation and about your demographics. It should take approximately 20 minutes to complete both surveys.

  3. Student Class Work: The third requirement is optional. If you choose to complete this requirement, you will snail-mail one set of graded classroom assignments, homework, or quizzes in geometry. The set of class work should be from one group of students that completed the online geometry tests. The set of class work will not be returned to you. While the first two requirements must be completed by November 24, you will have until February 21, 2011 to complete this third requirement.

What are the benefits of participation?

Upon completion of the first two requirements, you will receive a $175 stipend for each geometry test administered (maximum stipend is $525). If you choose to complete the third requirement, you will receive an additional $100 stipend. You will also receive instant feedback about your students' performance on the online geometry test items.

What are the technology requirements?

In order to participate, you must have the ability to give an online test to a classroom of your students (e.g., an Internet-connected computer lab). Each computer used by the students must have:
