center on wealth and philanthropy
The Center on Wealth and Philanthropy maintains an archive of data files used to support its research activities. These files are available for use by all members of the Boston College university community. Code books and data documentation are available for use in the CWP offices at Room 508 McGuinn Hall. These materials do not circulate but may be copied at a cost of $.05 per page. While CWP provides access to its research data files, it does not provide user support services. User support is provided by the Academic and Research Services in Gasson Hall and the Student Learning and Support Center in the O'Neill Library.
General Social Survey conducted annually by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago with a national representative sample of approximately 3,000 households. The data contain detailed information concerning demographic characteristics of the household and its members, family structure, family functioning, organizational affiliations, and employment of family members.
Survey of Consumer Finances conducted approximately every three years by the Federal Reserve with a national representative sample of households and oversamples of high income and wealthy households. The data contain detailed information concerning demographic characteristics of the household and its members, family structure, employment, income and components of income, health insurance, and retirement plans. Its focus, however, is very detailed information on the composition of assets and liabilities, which jointly constitute net worth, a common measure of wealth.
The Survey of Giving and Volunteering in the United States is conducted every two years by the Gallup Organization for the Independent Sector with a national representative sample of approximately 2,700 households and oversamples of minority and high income households. The data contain demographic information and detailed information concerning giving and volunteering both to charitable organizations and, on an informal basis directly, to individuals. Information includes contributions to 12 categories of organizations, time volunteered to 14 categories of organizations, as well as selected attitudinal and motivational data.
