About the Study

With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Calibre - a division of Wachovia Wealth Management - the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College is conducting a study on households with a net worth of at least $25 million. A major goal of this study is to generate unique and hard-to-obtain knowledge about the attitudes, practices, and personal philosophy of ultra high net worth households, especially concerning philanthropy. To our knowledge, this is the first substantial study of wealth holders at this level and thus constitutes an unparalleled research study of ultra high net worth households.

Participation in this study, called The Joys and Dilemmas of Wealth, will provide a rare insight into the financial and philanthropic discernment process of ultra high net worth households.  In the broadest sense, these insights will help other wealth holders to mobilize their resources and create a culture of philanthropy where the great wealth of the world is used to solve the great problems of the world.

The Center on Wealth and Philanthropy will present the findings in a public report, to be distributed nationally.  For the public at large, the report will offer accurate information that will counter misleading myths and promote fresh thinking about the activities and attitudes of wealth holders. For wealth holders, the report will be a valuable tool for self-reflection. For financial and philanthropic advisors, the report will provide insight into how they may offer a more appropriate array of financial and charitable options.

Privacy and confidentiality are of paramount importance. No personally identifiable information is requested in the study, and the findings are reported in aggregate.  The names of participants will never be given to anyone and participants will never be solicited for any financial support.

If you or your organization is interested in participating in the study, or if you have any questions related to the study, please call the Center at 617-620-0970 or e-mail Robert A. Kenny at robert.kenny.1@bc.edu. Please note, phone calls are typically returned within the hour if you are calling between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. EST, or the next morning if you are calling after 10:00 p.m.
