The Joys and Dilemmas of Wealth Study

Through the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Calibre - a division of Wachovia Wealth Management - the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College is conducting a study on households with a net worth of at least $25 million. A major goal of this study is to generate unique and hard-to-obtain knowledge about the attitudes, practices, and personal philosophy of ultra high net worth households, especially concerning philanthropy.

CWP Receives $600-thousand Grant From Gates Foundation
The award will be used to expand the capacity of the Center, which is nationally recognized for its research on the patterns of charitable giving by wealth holders.   Among other initiatives, the grant will launch an unparalleled wealth study - the first large-scale survey to focus exclusively on households with at least $25 million in net worth, with a considerable portion of those respondents above $100 million, including some billionaires.

Charitable Giving Indices: Social Indicators of Philanthropy by State
New research by the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College identifies New York, Utah, California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, Massachusetts, Hawaii and South Carolina as the ten leaders in charitable giving among the 50 states. In addition, the District of Columbia was second only to New York in the new report, released this week by the Boston Foundation.

Wealth transfer estimates are projections of the amount of household wealth to be transferred at d eath. For several years we have focused on our national estimates. Wealth Transfer Report: Good Tidings We Bring: The $41 Trillion Wealth Transfer is Still Valid
December 2002- The markets may be down, but the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history is still coming to town. We released out report "Millionaire and the Millennium" in October 1999, documenting an intergenerational wealth transfer of at least $41 trillion over the next five decades, of which at least $6 trillion would go to charity. Three years and much market turbulence later, we are confident in saying that the $41 trillion figure is still a reasonable lower estimate and does not need to be revised downward.

Wilmington, DE, August 31, 2004 - Consulting Group, the managed money unit of Smith Barney, and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University will co-sponsor a national seminar  focused on "Contemporary Issues Facing Foundation and Endowment Executives and Trustees" on October 19, 2004. The seminar, which is open to foundation trustees, nonprofit leaders, fundraisers and interested media, will be held at the University Place Conference Center in Indianapolis.
