am pleased to welcome you to the web site of the Boston College Center on Wealth
and Philanthropy (formerly the Social Welfare Research Institute). Over the
past two decades we have been carrying out research on the topics of charitable
giving, wealth, spirituality, and philanthropy. Our work is both theoretical
and empirical, and often involves the construction of interview and survey instruments.
As you will see, much of our research focuses on charitable giving and volunteering.
But our broader concern is with the forms, trends, and motives surrounding the
meaning and practice of care in our contemporary age of affluence. We are proud
that our research and writings have been recognized nationally by way of research
awards, foundation support, and invitations to address and conduct seminars
with academic audiences, professional fundraisers, development officers, and
financial planners. I increasingly find the ability to obtain information from
the web to be a valuable resource. I hope the resources we have to offer will
