Racial & Ethnic Diversity in the US Older Adult Labor Force—Fact Sheet

September 2010—As the older adult labor force becomes increasingly diverse, so does the work experience and reasons for working.
- The odds of being very satisfied with life are 45.3% lower for white non-Hispanics than for people of other ethnic/racial backgrounds;
- Job loss in 2009 for Hispanics aged 45+ was twice that of the general population; and
- In 2009, unemployment rates among males aged 65+ reached about 11% for African Americans, 8% for Hispanics, and 6% for non-Hispanic whites.
Also discussed is how the current recession has impacted the diversity of older workers.
