Robert Morse, who has served as Boston College police chief for 17 years, has been appointed as the University’s first director of public safety.

Announcing the appointment last week, Financial Vice President Peter McKenzie said the decision reflected the University’s need for a seasoned professional to “ensure that all campus stakeholders are contributing optimally to the collective responsibility and that critical planning for public safety is coordinated among campus constituencies.”

Morse was a major in the Massachusetts State Police with 25 years of service in the department when he joined BC in 1992. He will continue to serve as police chief during the search for his replacement, said McKenzie.

“Over the past 17 years, Chief Morse has overseen the professional development of the Boston College Police Department. His many years of command and public safety experience...make him uniquely qualified to serve as director of public safety.”

Morse said, “I’m very pleased with BC’s confidence in selecting me for this new position and I look forward to taking on these responsibilities.

“Policing has changed on college campuses, given events of the past several years and the concerns they have generated about the impact of both man-made and natural disasters. We have to look at a far bigger picture, and draw together more resources, to determine how we can best protect the University community.”
