October Is a Green Scene at BC
By
October in Boston is marked by the suffusion of red, yellow, brown, orange and other autumnal colors, but green is very much in evidence this month around Boston College.A series of campus events promoting conservation and sustainability are taking place as part of the “Live Green Series” organized through the Undergraduate Government of Boston College, Ecopledge, RealFoodBC and several other organizations and offices.
So far this month, members of the University community have had the opportunity to participate in “Project Greenway” — reworking old clothes and recyclable materials to “revamp your wardrobe” — sample health and beauty products from environmentally conscious vendors, and see a display of environmental-friendly fashion by BC artists and local stores.
Other events have included a tasting of food prepared through BC Dining Service’s efforts to provide more sustainable menus, and a talk, co-sponsored by the Lowell Lectures Humanities Series, by Dean Cycon, owner of the Western Massachusetts organic, fair-trade coffee roasting business Dean’s Beans.
On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Winston Forum on Business Ethics will present a talk on corporate social responsibility by Green Mountain Coffee Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility Mike Dupee ’91 (4:30 p.m., Yawkey Center).
The following day at 6:30 p.m., Gasson 100 will be the site for “Feeding Ourselves, Feeding the World,” a discussion on food governance and sustainability with business leaders, faculty, students, non-profits and community interest groups. The BC community also is being encouraged to mark International Day of Climate Action this Saturday — the Web site 350.org has information on events and other activities.
