Boston College will host the largest gathering of AHANA alumni in University history during “Reconnect,” to be held July 16-19.

In 1979, the University adopted the acronym AHANA to refer to people of African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American descent. Today, nearly one quarter of the undergraduate student body identifies themselves as AHANA and BC’s AHANA alumni has grown to nearly 10,000.

The weekend aims to give AHANA students an opportunity to come together, reminisce and form both personal and professional ties, say organizers. Career information, networking and historical overview sessions, discussions on diversity and career advancement strategies, and a presentation on the University’s Institutional Master Plan by Executive Vice President Patrick Keating will be on the itinerary as well as a Caribbean lobster bake, a formal gala and a golf tournament.

“There has been no real effort to reengage AHANA alumni over the years and we viewed this as part of a community building effort,” said Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations John Feudo, who cites conversations with University Trustee Keith Francis and Senior Vice President for University Advancement James Husson as integral to the event’s origins.

“Through his travels as a trustee, Keith Francis has seen AHANA graduates throughout the country interested in reconnecting with one another, but not knowing exactly how to do so. He viewed this as an opportunity to reconnect them with BC as a whole. Many people across campus have been very receptive to the idea.”
