"we have a responsibility to sustain - if not enhance - our natural environment and our nation's economy for future generations." - steve johnson, u.s. environmental protection agency administrator

ABOUT JOHN
Reduce, reuse, recycle – these three words serve as an excellent guideline to the issue of sustainability. John, through his work with Cleansweep, has focused most significantly on the “reuse” element.
ABOUT CLEANSWEEP
Cleansweep is the project at the end of Boston College’s school year when approximately 150 members of the “BC family” gather usable items that departing students cannot take home with them. These items are distributed to churches and other non-profit agencies throughout greater Boston – for FREE! In addition to these agencies benefiting in particular, the environment benefits tremendously as well. The 75,000 to 100,000 items collected would have gone into the trash, just to end up in some landfill. This completely unnecessary waste was avoided through the generosity of so many members of the BC family.
WHY JOHN IS INVOLVED
Most of the items collected are durable goods that continue to give value month after month, year in, year out. John enjoys knowing that rooms are made bright with the lamps obtained, children are made warm as they sleep with the bedding and blankets they received, and dishes, pots and pans allow families from a shelter to cook in their own homes.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
2008 marks the 17th year that Boston College students, employees, alumni, Jesuits, parents, and friends – the BC family – have united to give this gift to particular agencies, to greater Boston, and to the environment. Please consider combining your talent, time and energy with John’s efforts to sustain the environment and make the world a better place by contributing to Cleansweep.
