About JessicaJessica Schmierer

In 2007, Jess graduated from Boston College with a major in Biology and a minor in Environmental Studies.  She now works as the Environmental Studies Program Coordinator, managing the minor and taking on the challenge of advising 140 registered students.  Jess also works as a teacher in a science-based after school program run through the Urban Ecology Institute.

Jess & the Environmental Studies Minor

“We are trying to reach out more and trying to get the word out about the minor.  We have a lot of students, but sometimes kids come in senior year and say 'I’ve never heard about this program, I wish I had known earlier.'  I would love to see an Environmental Studies major here.  I think the students want it.  The minor has been here for ten years and has really established itself, and a major would improve our program and increase research opportunities."

Jess is consistent in alerting minors of upcoming events taking place on the BC campus, in Boston, and elsewhere.  As potential opportunities arise for minors, such as internships and graduate school fairs, Jess is always sure to let them know.  She also works on keeping the web page for the minor up to date and informative.

Jess & The Outdoors

"I try to always keep up to date on upcoming events in Boston and participate in the Sierra Club and the AMC.  My upbringing of being outdoors, whether it was hiking or skiing, definitely is the reason that I have maintained working in the field of environmental studies.  People don’t have to go far to go outdoors—I’m a big proponent of finding a local green or park.  In this technological era of ours, you can’t get the same thing from your computer that you can from walking around the block.  There’s a lot that people don’t notice--there is so much going on in our cities."

Rock climbing, hiking, sailing and skiing are just a few of the activities that Jess does to get outdoors and appreciate the natural beauty of our environment.  Jess has done a great deal to spread the word about the importance of connecting with nature through leading outdoor trips, talking to students and just by bringing her friends along for the fun!
