The Federal PLUS Loan

Application Process

Parents of Undergraduate Students

Once the decision is made to borrow a PLUS loan, parents must choose a lender. Any lender that participates in the PLUS program may be selected. The Boston College Financial Aid staff encourages you to compare the loan benefits offered by different lenders so that an informed choice can be made.

To make the selection process easier, Boston College has identified a group of selected lenders for our suggested lender list. If you select a lender from this list, you can be assured that you will receive outstanding borrower benefits and customer service.

Once you have made your selection, simply click on the link to the American Student Assistance (ASA) website where you will be able to apply for your PLUS loan online. ASA will then process your application and notify Boston College electronically if the loan is approved. Boston College will then certify the application. Certification is the verification of the student's attendance at Boston College, their total Cost of Attendance, and any resources. The certification is then transmitted electronically back to ASA so that the loan may be disbursed.

You may also choose a lender that is not guaranteed by ASA. If you choose to do this, you must complete your application directly with that lender, who must then send a paper certification form to Boston College. We will complete and return the certification form so that the loan may be disbursed.

Graduate and Law Students

Graduate and Law students are eligible to apply for federal PLUS loans; however, you must first have applied for your annual maximum loan eligibility under the Federal Stafford Loan program, both subsidized and unsubsidized. Once that process has been completed, you may apply for a PLUS loan if you so choose.
