Frequently Asked Questions: Room Selection Process
office of residential life
I missed the deadline for the Housing Intent form. What do I do?
Please send an email to placement@bc.edu with the following information: First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, Username, Year of Graduation, and whether or not you plan on entering the Room Selection Process in order to live on campus for next year. As this is a mandatory, deadline-driven process, there is a possibility that you will no longer be eligible for the Room Selection Process, and you will instead have to appeal for housing via the Agora Portal. top
What is the Room Selection Process?
During the Spring semester, eligible students will secure on-campus housing for the next academic year through the Room Selection Process. In order to live on campus next year, students must go through the Room Selection Process. If you do not go through the Room Selection Process, you will not have a room on campus next year. top
Where is the Room Selection Process held?
Registration for the room Selection Process is done via My ResLife on the Agora Portal. The actual selection of the rooms will take place online. top
I have been accepted to BC as an incoming Freshman. Do I have to go through Room Selection?
If you are an incoming Freshman, you do not need to go through the Room Selection Process. Your room assignment will be made over the summer. top
Who is eligible to participate in the Room Selection Process?
All students who are entering into a guaranteed year of housing are eligible, providing they are:
- Free of any sanctions from the Office of Residential Life and/or the Dean for Student Development
- A full-time matriculating day student
- Free of any outstanding obligation on their student account. top
How do I find out if I am eligible?
To find out how many years of guaranteed housing you have, you can check on the Agora Portal. Once in the portal, go to "My ResLife," then click on "Web Forms," then "Assignment History." The information can be found there.
Students who have received a specific sanction barring them from room selection will be administratively placed over the summer. Additionally, students suspended from housing or the University will not be eligible for the Room Selection Process.
To clear up any outstanding balances on your student account or to inquire about your condut status, please contact Student Services at (617) 552-3300 or the Offie of Residential Life at (617) 552-3060, respectively. top
What if I am not eligible for housing next year, but I have a group of friends who are eligible? Can they pull me into their group to enter Room Selection?
If you have friends who are eligible to live on campus next year, but you are not eligible for Room Selection, they cannot pull you into their group for Room Selection. If you are not eligible for to participate in the Room Selection Process, you can submit a Housing Appeal through the Agora Portal. top
How does the Room Selection Process work?
There are four main parts to the Room Selection Process:
- Housing Intent Form: In order to begin the Room Selection Process, eligible students must complete their Housing Intent on the Returning Student Application via "My ResLife" on the Agora Portal.
- Group Registration: The Group Leader registers the group for a particular accommodation type via "My ResLife." Room registrations take place between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
- Room Draw: Following the close of registration, a computer-driven random drawing will select the participants of each selection. All members of the groups that participate in each drawing will receive an email regarding their drawing results.
- Room Pick: If a group is selected to pick a room, each member will receive an email with the scheduled time at which the group leader will select next year's room assignment online. The selection will take place later that same day.
After a group has picked the room, the process is over. If a group was not drawn for a particular accommodation type, that group will have to continue through the process for the next available selection. top
What if I don't select a Room in the Room Selection Process?
In order to reside on campus next Fall, students must participate in the Room Selection Process. Any eligible student who does not select a room or participate in Final Selection by the end of the Room Selection Process will no longer be eligible to live on campus and may forfeit all future claims to on-campus housing.
Please note: Declaring your intent to live on campus is not enough to receive a room on campus the following year. Each student must also either pick a room with a group or participate as an individual in the Final Selection process. top
I am studying abroad right now. How do I enter the Room Selection Process?
As the system is now being conducted via Agora, students who currently live on campus, are abroad, or are living off campus can all equally participate in the process. Proxy forms are no longer needed.
We do not have a complete group but would like to enter the drawing. Can you just randomly assign someone to that space?
You must have a complete group in order to enter a drawing. top
What if I need an extra roommate(s)?
You will have the opportunity to search for roommates using the Returning Student Application available through "My ResLife" on the Agora Portal. Please see the previous and next questions and answers as well. top
What if I do not have anyone with whom I am interested in entering the Room Selection Process?
If you would like to find roommates with whom you can enter the Room Selection Process, you will have the opportunity to search for roommates using the Returning Student Application, available through "My ResLife" on the Agora Portal. This is the same application used for declaring intent and registering a group.
Another option is to enter into Final Selection, which is the last event for Room Selection. On the designated days for Final Selection, students should enter themselves into this process via the housing application on "My ResLife" in the Agora Portal. Over the summer, we will place the students from Final Selection into their Fall assignments, doing our best to work with their preferences. top
How do I apply for a single room?
The limited number of single rooms are reserved for medical placements. If you have a documented medical condition that requires a single room, you can submit an appeal form with accompanying medical documentation.
If you do not have a medical condition that would warrant a single room, you can request one by participating in Final Selection. Please note that in order to register for Final Selection, you cannot have selected a room in the group portion of the Room Selection Process. Requesting a single in Final Selection does not guarantee you will receive one. If singles are not available at that time, we will assign you to a room with a roommate using your second or third preference from Final Selection. When assigning students from Final Selection to single rooms, we will give preference to rising Seniors, then rising Juniors, then rising Sophomores.
Our single rooms are located in 66 Commonwealth Ave. and Greycliff Hall, with the majority in Greycliff. top
What are the chances of receiving the accommodation I want?
Many students ask the probability of receiving a certain living accommodation. The demand for every accommodation on campus varies from year to year. There is no way to predict how many students will enter each drawing each year, so there is no way that we can estimate your probability of receiving the accommodation you want. top
What is blocking? Will it increase my chances?
Blocking provides groups with the opportunity to select rooms right after each other. When groups wish to block, both groups must Fall into the same Room Selection Category, and male and female groups may block with each other if they would like. The groups who are blocking must register together on Agora. For the 4-person room registration, students may block up to three groups. For the 2-, 3-, and 4-person traditional style rooms, up to 8 names may be blocked. For all other processes, two groups may block together. Blocking does not help or hurt your chances of getting selected. top
I'll be a Sophomore next year. If I do not receive a suite, do I automatically get put onto College Road?
If your group does not get pulled for an accommodation in a suite on Lower Campus, you will not automatically be placed into a room on College Road. Your group will have to enter the drawing for 2-, 3-, or 4-person traditional-style rooms. Such rooms are located on College Road and in 66 Commonwealth Ave. and Greycliff Hall. top
I'll be a Sophomore next year. What are the chances of Sophomores living on Lower Campus?
Lower Campus Housing Capacity = 4,542
Approximate number of Upperclassmen who will live on campus = 5,138
Approximate number of Sophomores who will live on College Road = 596
Depending on the number of students who participate in the Room Selection Process, it may be necessary to open Fitzpatrick and Gonzaga for Sophomore students. top
I have three years of housing. Can I live off campus my Sophomore year and live on campus my Junior year?
If a student was granted three years of housing, their mandatory year off campus is Junior year. They cannot switch their off-campus year from Junior year to Sophomore or Senior year. If a Sophomore student with three years of housing chooses to move off campus, he/she will have to remain off campus for both Sophomore and Junior years, but will be eligible to move back on campus Senior year. top
How do I apply for Special Interest Housing?
Applications for Special Interest Housing are made available during the early stages of the Room Selection Process. Students can complete the application by logging in to "My ResLife" via the Agora Portal. The Special Interest Housing options are 66 Honors House, Gabelli Honors House, the Romance Language floor, and the Healthy Alternatives Lifestyle Floor. top
I am going abroad in the Fall and have been granted housing for the Spring semester. Do I have to go through Room Selection?
You do not have to go through the full Room Selection Process. You do, however, still need to declare your housing intent, and you should indicate that you do not intend to live on campus because you will be abroad. This does not affect your Spring semester housing. While you are away in the Fall, we will contact you to ask you what you preferences are for when you return in the Spring. You can request to live in a certain residence hall, with certain roommates, or in a specific room that you know will be available in the Spring. Over Winter break, we will contact you with your Spring placement. top
I have a medical need that may require me to live in a certain type of accommodation.
If you have a medical situation that may require a special placement, you can contact the Placement office at (617) 552-8582 or placement@bc.edu. top
I might transfer, live off campus, or participate in a study-abroad program. Should I still go through Room Selection?
Any student unsure of their future plans should go through the Room Selection Process. Any eligible student who does not select a room or participate in Final Selection by the end of the Room Selection Process will no longer be eligible to live on campus and may forfeit all future claims to on-campus housing.
If you do go through the Room Selection Process and then decide at a later date that you will not need to live on campus anymore, you can fill out a Leave of Absence from Housing form on the Agora Portal, and your room assignment will be canceled. You will either not be charged for the room at all or you will receive a full refund, depending on when you submit the form. Students are entitled to a 100% refund for room and board as long as they fill out the form by the end of first week of classes. top
