Campus Recreation offers many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate student employment.

If you would like to apply for any positions, fill out the PDF application, save it to your computer and hand deliver it to the Member Services Office in the Flynn Recreation Complex. Some jobs may not have a PDF application. Instead, email the listed documents or information to the person listed in the job description.

Water Safety Instructor (Private/Semi-Private & Swim Lessons)

Job Description

  • Provide WSI based instruction to youth and adults
  • Teach lesson in packs of five, 30-60 minute blocks
  • Consistent weekly schedule

Lifeguard

Job Description

  • Prevent aquatic-related emergencies as a member of a risk management team
  • Provide great customer service
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks
  • Assist with special needs of members and guests in compliance with ADA regulations
  • Assist as a member of an event management team

Requirements

  • Current CPR/AED, First Aid & Lifeguard certifications
  • Pass staff in-service skill test
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent physical and mental strength

Starting pay rate: $11.50/hr

Fall 2017 Available Positions

Special Event Student Staff

Certified $13/hr. Work special events before, during and after building hours. Set up/tear down:  tables, chairs, signage, volleyball nets, official stands, badminton nets, tennis nets, divider nets, basketball goals, wallyball nets, water stations, technology (scoreboards, laptops, projection equipment, screens, TVs, conference phones, etc) and other equipment as needed. Provide standard of care by being certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED to respond to emergency situations during events. Provide access to facility before or after regular building hours. This position requires schedule flexbility as events will be held at varying times, typically evenings and weekends. Non-Certified $11.25/hr.

Quonset Hut Monitor - Newton Campus (Academic Year Only)

Job Description

  • Responsible for safety and security of the facility
  • Monitor facility access
  • Opening and closing of the facility
  • First responder to all injuries & incidents
  • Responsible for equipment check-out and sales of guest passes
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the all spaces including re-racking weights and cleaning equipment
  • Enforcing the policies of Campus Recreation and of the Quonset Hut facility
  • Significant interaction with members, students, faculty/staff, guests

Requirements

  • Access to Newton Campus
  • CPR/AED & First Aid Certified
  • Ability to lift objects at least 45 lbs.
  • Customer focused individuals
  • Willing to work mornings (starting at 7:45am), nights (until 11:00pm), and weekends
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Outgoing personality
  • Good communication skills

  • Valid adult CPR/AED certification upon hire (okay to complete after hire, but needed before first shift)
  • Ability to lift at least 45 lbs.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel as needed to perform job responsibilities
  • Knowledge of fitness equipment

Responsibilities

  • Enforce policies
  • Maintain fitness center cleanliness by cleaning equipment and re-racking weights and accessories
  • Complete task shifts with attention to detail
  • Provide customer service
  • Maintain positive, upbeat and helpful attitude
  • Provide emergency response
  • Provide fitness area and equipment orientations
  • Provide a spot to members if able
  • Pay attention without distractions - no mobile phone use or homework/reading allowed during shift

Fitness Maintenance

Requirements

  • Ability to lift at least 45 lbs.

  • Knowledgeable of fitness equipment

Responsibilities

  • Provide thorough cleaning of fitness spaces and equipment
  • Re-rack weights and accessories
  • Inspect equipment log for needed repairs
  • Complete task shifts with attention to detail
  • Maintain positive, upbeat and helpful attitude
  • Pay attention without distractions - no mobile phone use or homework/reading allowed during shift

Personal Trainer (Graduate Student Only)

Requirements

  • Valid adult, child and infant CPR/AED and First Aid certification upon hire (can complete after hire, but before first shift)
  • Valid personal training certification upon hire (ACE, NSCA, ACSM, or NASM)
  • Undergraduate students must take BC Rec Personal Trainer Prep Course to be considered for employment
  • Ability to lift at least 45 lbs.
  • Availability to work flexible hours

Responsibilities

  • Provide health and fitness assessments
  • Provide one-on-one and small group fitness instruction
  • Provide customer service
  • Maintain fitness area cleanliness and organization
  • Maintain positive, upbeat and helpful attitude
  • If hired, must also work one shift per week as a Fitness Attendant for first semester of employment
  • Enforce policies
  • Provide emergency response

Starting pay rate: $16.00/hr

  • Must be available for a minimum of 2 shifts a week Sunday-Thursday Night

Club Sport Event Supervisor

Position Summary‚Ä®
Club Sport Event Supervisors are responsible for serving as the on-site administrator at Club Sports competitions, practices, and special events. Their role is to oversee all aspects of the event from start to finish which includes facility management and the supervision of participants, officials, and spectators to ensure that everything runs smoothly and safely. Event Supervisors are required to work nights and weekends, but hours will fluctuate throughout the year. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Inspect facilities and equipment for safety and assist with set up and break down
  • Communicate pertinent information with participants, coaches, officials, and athletic trainers
  • Monitor and maintain control over all spectators
  • Enforce all departmental and university policies
  • Be prepared to act as a first responder and initiate emergency procedures as needed
  • Serve as a liaison between Club Sports and other on-campus departments (Ex: BCPD, Athletics, Parking, Facilities, Catering, etc.)
  • Complete departmental forms including: incident/injury, ejection, and game-day reports
  • Represent the program in a professional manner
  • Perform random risk management checks at practices
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Club Sports

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated level of interest in club sports and campus recreation
  • Enrolled as a full-time Boston College undergraduate or graduate student
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Able to recognize and respond to conflicts while maintaining a calm working environment
  • Able to work independently and without direct supervision
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role preferred
  • Certified in CPR/AED and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer through the American Red Cross or willing to obtain certification upon hire (provided)
  • Available and willing to work afternoons, nights, and weekends
  • Able to attend mandatory job orientation and training on August 26 & 27

Starting pay rate: $13.00/hr
