The Office of the Dean for Student Development (ODSD) exists to affirm the academic and societal mission of Boston College within the context of its Jesuit and Catholic tradition. ODSD's primary responsibility is to assist students in obtaining maximum educational benefit from collegiate life outside of the classroom. From this purpose emerges ODSD's involvement in all phases of student life, ranging from cocurricular student activities to the student judicial system, and thus most aspects of the University.

The Student Programs Office provides programming and leadership advisement for student clubs and organizations, as well as fosters an environment for student formation. The office facilitates the planning of educational, cultural, and social programs by the over 150 registered student organizations, including the undergraduate student government.
Additionally, the Student Programs Office coordinates a room reservation service for clubs and supervises the Freshman Welcome Series, Senior Week events, the Emerging Leader Program, O’Connell House Student Union, and an annual Leadership Awards Ceremony.

Services for students with hearing, visual, mobility, medical, psychiatric, and temporary disabilities are coordinated through the assistant dean for students with disabilities. Academic support services for students with documented disabilities are individualized and may include sign language interpreters, books on CD, extended time on exams, an alternate testing location, facilitation of program modification, course underloads, readers, scribes, and note-takers.

The Office of Graduate Student Life provides outreach to Boston College graduate students through a variety of programs, services, and advocacy efforts. Working together with faculty, staff, and student organizations, the Office of Graduate Student Life provides both academic and non-academic support to the graduate student community, in the service of developing the whole person and furthering the University's mission.
The John Courtney Murray, S.J. Graduate Student Center is an essential component to building community among and serving as a center of hospitality for graduate students. The Murray Graduate Student Center (located across Beacon Street from McElroy Commons) provides a welcoming space for graduate students and offers many amenities and services.
International Students and Scholars

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) provides assistance and services to international students, scholars, faculty, and their dependents on immigration, academic, financial, and personal matters. The office coordinates programs and provides resources to assist international students and scholars during their stay in the U.S. The staff of the OISS can advise on procedures for travel outside the U.S., extensions of stay, change of visa status, employment in the U.S., post-graduation plans, and other immigration issues. The office also coordinates the Global Proficiency Program.

Alcohol and Drug Education

The Office of the Dean for Student Development, through the Alcohol and Drug Education (ADE) Program, is committed to providing a variety of educational programs and services related to the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Programs and services include online alcohol education for all first-year students, assistance for students experiencing alcohol or other drug-related problems, and information and resources for all members of the BC community.
Emerging Leader Program

The Emerging Leader Program (ELP) is a year-long leadership program designed to assist freshmen in developing the skills and competencies needed to assume roles of thoughtful responsibility in both on- and off-campus clubs and organizations. Fifty students (out of 250+ applicants) are selected during the summer prior to their freshman year. During each semester, participants attend weekly sessions centering on themes such as leadership, communication, assertiveness, decision making, values and ethics, relationships, and diversity issues. Students are also active participants in monthly community service projects.
Global Proficiency Program

Co-sponsored by both Academic and Student Affairs, the Global Proficiency Program is a certificate program that encourages students to incorporate an international, cross-cultural perspective in all aspects of their college experience. The requirements of the program include academic coursework, an international experience, cocurricular activities, language study, and a service component. Upon completion, Global Proficiency graduates receive a detailed transcript of all of their international accomplishments while at BC which can then be used to apply for jobs, graduate schools, fellowships, and other opportunities.
Nights on the Heights

Nights on the Heights is a student-led program that provides students with entertainment and opportunities to socialize on campus on Friday and Saturday nights between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Women's Resource Center

The Women's Resource Center (WRC) is a comfortable place on campus that offers information, support, and community. Committed to celebrating and empowering women, the WRC seeks to provide education and awareness about women's issues, to promote social justice, and to provide support for students on campus. The WRC is staffed by undergraduate students and a full-time director, each trained to provide peer counseling on issues such as body image, health, and relationships. Annual WRC programs include the Love Your Body Campaign, Easter Help Baskets for women's shelters, and Women's Retreats.

The Office of the Dean for Student Development is charged with maintaining a community that is conducive to the overall mission of Boston College. Sexual Assault Network

The Sexual Assault Network (SANet) provides assistance for students who may be victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. The network is a group of trained professionals and students who have volunteered to serve as advocates for survivors of sexual assault. All discussions with members of SANet are strictly confidential. Student and staff network members can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 617-552-BC11 (2211).
