This is a list of co-curricular and service activities that GP students have done to fulfill their GP Co-curricular requirements. Use this list as a guide to better understand how students can successfully complete the GP program. For more ideas see Resources and Links.
At Boston College
Co-curricular
- Peer Advisor, Center for International Partnerships and Programs (CIPP): Peer Advisors for CIPP advise students on study abroad experiences, as well as organize, attend and present information on study abroad programs.
- International Assistant (IA): The purpose of the IA Program is to facilitate the adjustment of new international students to Boston College, Boston, and American life in general, especially during the crucial first month. The IA's play a major role in the 4-day International Student Orientation which takes place just prior to the freshman and transfer student orientation.
- UGBC, Director of International Student Issues: The director develops and coordinates programs for international students at BC.
- Organizer for Globalization and Inequality Lecture Series: A student organized a six part lecture series for the on-campus community.
- Active member of an Intercultural Club: There are many different clubs on campus that will not only broaden students' horizons, but fulfill a co-curricular activity requirement. Some clubs include, but are not limited to: Model UN, International Business Academy, Armenian Club, Asian Caucus, Caribbean Culture Club, Chinese Student Association, AHANA Leadership Council, Hellenic Society etc.
- AHANA Leadership Council Member: Students work to address issues of diversity and promote cultural awareness on the Boston College campus with other minority student leaders.
Service
- 4Boston Volunteer Program: 4Boston is a program of Campus Ministry which places students in a supervised social service or social change agency 4 hours/week for the entire academic year.
- Campus Ministry Appalachia Volunteers: Students attend weekly meetings to prepare for a week-long trip to the Appalachia region of the United States. Students volunteer to work at several different work sites and projects.
- Boston College Neighborhood Center (BCNC): BCNC is an agency through which Boston College provides resources to the Allston-Brighton community. The Center's location, in Brighton Center, helps to facilitate the many partnerships that Boston College cultivates with local schools and social agencies.
- Jamez Pueblo Service and Immersion Trip: This spring break trip is committed to the education, cultural awareness, and solidarity of BC students with the Jamez Peoples of New Mexico through service and immersion expereinces on the Jemez Pueblo.
In Boston and US:
Co-curricular
- Internship at the US Department of State: A student worked as a reference librarian at the Foreign Service Institute, providing research assistance to Foreign Service Officers, personnel and interns.
- Hosted German Exchange Student: A student facilitated a cultural exchange with German students in a choir. While the group was in the U.S., she organized and assisted in preparing the events for the group.
- Internship in Senator John Kerry's Office: A student assisted constituents with immigration and naturalization concerns.
- Internship with the United States Mission to the UN: A student attended Security Council meetings at the UN as a note taker for the Political Section.
Service
- Math Teacher at Bi-lingual School: A student volunteered as a math teacher in a downtown Boston Catholic school serving predominantly Latino, underprivileged students.
- International Rescue Committee: Students help integrate newly arrived refugees into American society.
- English as a Second Language Program: A student instructed a course in conversational English to Colombian, immigrant family through the Boston College Neighborhood Center.
- 4 Boston Placement, Commonwealth Tenant's Association After School Program: A student volunteered at a community center in a Boston public housing project and worked in its after-school program.
- PULSE Placement; McKay Elementary School: A student instructed a course in conversational English to primarily Spanish speaking students at McKay Elementary School.
- Internship at the Suffolk Courthouse: A student worked as a probation officer conducting exit interviews with a diverse population, kept probation records, and recorded arraignments and pre-trial interviews.
- Big Brother: A student was a Big Brother for a child living in an inner-city neighborhood.
- Boston Living Center: A student helped non-English speaking AIDS patients with healthcare and personal issues.
- ESL teacher at Head Start Program, Boston College Neighborhood Center : A student prepared lesson plans and curriculum for English classes. Promoted awareness and sharing of other cultures and languages in class.
- Civil Rights Intern; Community Change Inc.: A student assisted the directors in the coordination and organization of workshops, conferences and general office work. Organized and took part in workshops designed to heighten knowledge on civil rights issues and racial awareness.
- EPIC Center, Sunnyside WA: A student taught preschool at a summer school primarily attended by the children of local migrant workers.
- Volunteer, Centre Presente; Latin American Community Center: A student taught English to newly arrived immigrants from Latin and South America, worked on employment and naturalization of immigrants.
