What Are We? An Introduction to Boston College and Its Jesuit and Catholic Tradition The "Red Book" was written to introduce students and other newcomers to Boston College as a Jesuit university. It explains something of the distinctive spiritual vision that led to the founding of Boston College and that still animates BC today. The books contains a variety of readings: quotations from writers from different religious traditions, extracts from significant Jesuit documents, bits of BC history, classic Christian prayers as well as prayers from other religions, and short biographies of exemplary men and women. It also has essays about Jesuits, Jesuit education across the centuries, and the history of Boston College. The most important section in the book may be the one that lays out the principles of Ignatian spirituality. Not only can it help readers understand the set of ideas that inspired the founding of BC, it can also help them think about their own lives and their vocational journeys.

A Pocket Guide to Jesuit Education A Pocket Guide to Jesuit Education is an introduction to the principles that constitute the foundation of Jesuit education, derived from the distinctive spiritual vision of Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556), founder of the Jesuits. The Guide proposes that the different experiences students have as undergraduates—academic courses, research projects, internships, retreats, service programs, leadership opportunities, and so forth—can all be understood as parts of an unfolding process of discovering self and world and making the kinds of choices that fulfill their own God-given humanity and serve the needs of the world.
