Jamaica Summer

Arrupe International Program
ANNOTTO BAY, JAMAICA – SUMMER 2007

Trip Destination: Annotto Bay, Jamaica.

Trip Dates: Approximately two weeks in early August 2007.

Coordinating Organizations: Boston College Campus Ministry, in collaboration with St. Theresa’s Parish and several sorrounding communities.

Language Proficiency Required: None.

Background: Fr. Jim Webb, a Canadian Jesuit, is the Provincial of the Society of Jesus in Jamaica. He has been living and working in Jamaica for over 20 years and has been very active in serving small farmers in the area around Annotto Bay, as well as the free-election movement all over Jamaica. Sr. Nancy Sullivan, CSJ is a Canadian Sister of St. Joseph, who, along with Fr. Webb, runs St. Theresa’s Church in Annotto Bay Jamaica. In Addition to St. Theresa’s Church, Sr. Nancy works with several of the smaller communities around Annotto Bay and oversees a total of 6 parishes. Two of these other communities are May River and Tinsbury. Sr. Nancy has been doing pastoral work in the area for over 10 years. She supervises the daily operations of the parishes within her communities, as well as offers pastoral assistance and aid to the people of Annotto Bay. One key component of Sr. Nancy’s outreach is to sponsor a two week Summer School/Camp for the children in Annotto Bay, Tinsbury and May River. Traditionally, Boston College students have traveled to Jamiaca and run the camps in Annotto Bay and the surrounding communities. The Mission of St. Theresa’s and the Jesuits working in Jamaica resonates with Boston College’s mission, which challenges its students and others in the B.C. community to live justly with and with compassion for each other, and aligns with Campus Ministry’s Arrupe programs’ mission (see attachment). St. Theresa’s Parish, and the Summer Camp opportunities focus on building relationships and understanding through education and experience. The experience challenges program participants to think critically, discuss, reflect and act upon issues that affect the lives of others, especially those who struggle with injustice and in poverty.
