Getting Started with your BC Apple Laptop

Thank you for purchasing an Apple laptop through the BC Laptop Program. We hope the following information is helpful to you as you get started with your BC laptop. If you have any questions, please call the BC Help Center at 617-552-HELP (4357) or email help.center@bc.edu.

Return Policy: You can return an inoperable computer within 7 days of delivery. Please check to make sure your computer is working properly as soon as possible. If there is a problem, please report it right away to Apple Education Technical Support @ 800-800-2775. If you are unable to reach Apple Education Technical Support, please contact the BC Bookstore @ 800-978-0978 or 617-552-0900.

When you first start up your computer, you are asked to create a username and password. Please remember your username and password! You'll need them to log into your computer.

1. Get Sophos anti-virus software

Get the required Sophos Mac anti-virus software free of charge at: www.bc.edu/virus
Important: Currently, there is NO anti-virus software on your new laptop. All computers on the BC network must be running anti-virus software.

2. Update Mac OS X

You'll need to bring your computer up-to-date with any Mac software updates released by Apple since your computer shipped. You should automatically be prompted to update your computer. If not, from the Apple menu, select Software Update.

3. Get the software you need to register for classes

4. Install microsoft office

To install Microsoft Office 2008 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage), get it for free from the Software Download site at: www.bc.edu/software.

5. Keep all your laptop accessories with your laptop

Make sure to keep all of the items included with your laptop, including the Ethernet cable, with your laptop and bring them with you to Boston College. You may need them at some point.

6. Backup your important files

Start a good habit: Backup your important stuff on an external hard drive or your BC MyFiles@bc space at www.bc.edu/myfiles. Learn more at: www.bc.edu/backup
