There are currently two types of group email accounts at Boston College:
-
Forwarding
A forwarding group account allows you to use an email address that is not tied to a particular person. Mail sent to the address forwards directly to a group of up to 5 individual email addresses.
Forwarding Accounts and Exchange
All existing forwarding accounts will continue to operate in the same manner without any action required. -
Interactive
An interactive account is a stand-alone email account that has its own login credentials (username and password).
Due to security concerns and in preparation with the move to the Microsoft Exchange environment, Information Technology Services (ITS) is working on a concurrent project to greatly reduce the number of existing interactive group email accounts on campus. Learn more.
Interactive Group Accounts and Exchange
Group accounts, that have been deemed necessary, will be moved to the Exchange environment after all faculty and staff personal email accounts have been moved. These accounts will require a change to an alpha-numeric password.
Password Change
Information Technology Services will work with departments changing the password at the time of the department's move to Exchange. Faculty and staff using Microsoft Outlook to access both their personal accounts and group accounts will need to re-add the group account to the new Exchange profile. This work will be coordinated with the password change, and assistance will be provided.

How do you currently view messages sent to a group account? | |
| If you use... | ...then in the Exchange environment: |
| BC WebMail | Even though you will not be able to access your personal BC email through WebMail you will continue to use BC WebMail, to access your group email account. |
|
Mac OS X (Apple Mail) |
You will continue to access your group account in the same manner. During the ITS Pilot, we saw issues with sending email from the group account. Apple Mail requires a separate SMTP setup for each account. Learn how to configure your SMTP settings (coming soon). |
| Outlook |
If you use Outlook to view a BC group account, configuration for the group account will be lost when the new Exchange profile is created. You will need to add the account to your Exchange Profile. Learn how to add a group IMAP email account to your Exchange Profile: |
| Thunderbird | You will continue to access your group account in the same manner. During the ITS Pilot, we saw issues with sending email from the group account. Thunderbird requires a separate SMTP setup for each account. Learn how to configure your SMTP settings (coming soon). |
