Tech Prepared: Get Ready for the Christmas Break


BC offices are closed for the Christmas Holiday from Friday, December 24, through Sunday, January 2, re-opening on Monday, January 3. What do you need to know about technology to prepare for Christmas break?

Before the break, Help Center Phone Support will be available as usual Monday-Friday from 8:30 am – 7:00 pm, but will close on December 23 at 3:00 pm. Still need help? Self-service help on many different topics, including phones, VPN, Exchange Email, and anti-virus software is always available at

Before You Go

Christmas trees aren’t the only thing that should be green over Christmas break. Help BC conserve energy over the break by:

  • Turning off and unplugging your computer.
  • Turning off any lights at your desk.
  • Unplugging any adapters, chargers, and power cords. Unplugging monitors and printers helps assure they're not using any energy while the office is closed. Even when not in use, if they're plugged in, these devices do use some electricity.
  • Pull your shades down; this helps trap air and conserve energy.

Don’t forget to set your Out-of-Office email message. You can set it on Outlook Web Access (OWA) from any computer with an Internet connection. You may also want to change your voice mail greeting to let people know you’re out of the office. During break you can always check your voicemail online if you need to.

Technology Under the Tree

If Santa leaves a new computer, smart phone, or other tech-related gift under the tree, be sure to dispose of your old one properly. offers some tips and programs on disposing of and recycling e-waste.
