The City
Leiden is a picturesque and historic university town with 114,000 inhabitants. Its city center is criss-crossed with boat-lined canals, which are bordered by red brick roads. Walking and biking are the best modes of transportation within the town, and excellent public transportation provides easy access to The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. The North Sea, with its scenic beaches and sand dunes, is only eight miles to the west of Leiden, and easily accessible by bus. Since Leiden is a small town, all the university buildings are within walking or cycling distance. Because of its safe and rich cultural environment, Leiden students tend to feel at home quickly. International students are able to interact with Dutch students in the many lively cafes and pubs around town.
The University
Founded in 1575, Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands and enrolls over 17,000 students. The university is home to a unique collection of old maps and manuscripts and an elaborate collection of prints and drawings. There is also an extensive collection of plants and herbs in the botanical gardens and the national herbarium. Additionally, an industrial Bio-Science Park is associated with the University.
Since the promotion of international exchanges is one of Universiteit Leiden’s main priorities, visiting students may count on personal attention and guidance in both their academic and their personal life.
The Program
The study abroad program offers students a wide variety of courses taught in English. Students participate in courses with European and Dutch students. Strong departments include: Dutch studies, law and justice, English language and literature, European Union, and non-European area studies. The institutes in Latin American studies (in Spanish) and Islamic studies (in English) are renowned.

Prior to the first and second semesters, a two-day orientation program is organized. Leiden students act as guides and introduce their international guests to the university, the town, and social events. Newcomers are also introduced to courses in performance and fine arts offered by the Leiden University Academic Arts Centre (LAK).
