The City

A short distance from the Lake District and Manchester, and three hours from London and Edinburgh, Lancaster is renowned for its spectacular scenery. The area is ideal for backpacking, climbing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. The city of Lancaster is a blend of old and new, a friendly city with a population of 50,000, full of history and cultural opportunities. Attractions include medieval buildings, museums, the Duke’s Theatre, a covered market, Georgian homes, bistros and the Rives Lune.

The University

Founded in 1964, Lancaster University, with 11,000 students, sits on a hill three miles from the city center. Over thirty academic departments offer top-ranked programs of study in the sciences, management, social sciences, humanities, and education. The university is known for the quality of its teaching, its flexible, innovative curriculum, and its research.

The Program

Fall students select one of three pre-sessional programs on British history, culture, or science. Students at Lancaster enroll in regular university courses. Of particular interest are the university’s programs in business and management, creative writing, communication studies, environmental science, women’s studies and religious studies.

Orientation/Academic support

BC students participate in an orientation program at Lancaster. Faculty advisors are appointed by each department to provide academic counseling.

Housing

Students are housed in self-catered, single rooms in university dormitories.

Activities

The campus setting makes it easy for students to participate in social, cultural, and recreational activities. Students are housed in one of eight undergraduate colleges, which organize social and sporting activities and offer recreational areas that allow students to mix and socialize easily. Students can join the Students’ Union clubs and societies which cater to a wide range of interests. The city of Lancaster offers a professional theater and cinema, as well as numerous pubs and clubs. Manchester, only an hour away by train, provides a wealth of cultural, shopping, and sporting opportunities.
