Belfast, Northern Ireland

program description

The City

Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, traces its roots to a settlement of French Huguenots. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Belfast was swept up in the Industrial Revolution, and the population ballooned by the start of World War I. Despite the political strife plaguing Belfast since the late 1960s, a bustling, modern city center prospers not far from the strictly divided working-class areas of West Belfast. Since the end of “The Troubles,” the peaceful and lively city center is known for friendly citizens, gracious parks, splendid Victorian architecture, and trendy nightlife. Students have easy access by bus and train to other parts of Northern Ireland and to nearby County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, known for its breathtaking scenery.

The University

Situated on Belfast’s south side and admired for its Victorian architecture, students enjoy the private setting of the picturesque Queen’s University campus. Since its origin in 1845, the university has adhered to the principle of nondenominational teaching while encouraging equal opportunities for women. Queen’s offers courses and research opportunities in three faculties: humanities and social sciences; engineering and physical sciences; and medicine and health sciences.

The Program

Queen’s University offers 3,000 courses in nearly 100 subjects. The University’s internationally renowned Institute of Irish Studies—the first of its kind in the world—is the hub of interdisciplinary research and teaching, attracting many of its Fellows from across the Atlantic.

Activities

The university offers a wide range of clubs and societies, ranging from sports to academic interests. The International Friendship Association, a group of volunteers from Queen's University Christian Union and local churches, organizes excursions to nearby destinations in County Down, County Derry, and along the Antrim Coast, as well as other social events for international students.

Irish Studies Requirement

A&S students who wish to study in Ireland must successfully complete an Irish Studies course at Boston College prior to departure. A number of prerequisite courses are offered each year and may be found on the Irish Studies website.
