The City
Australia’s first city, Sydney grew out of a convict settlement founded in 1788. Since then, Sydney has developed into an exciting cosmopolitan city offering more entertainment, shopping, and sightseeing than any other place in Australia. Located on a stunning harbor, Sydney has a population of more than 4 million and is known for its youthful energy and sunny, temperate climate. Over 200,000 residents own registered boats, and thousands more enjoy fishing, paddling, and surfing at one of its 40 beaches, but the city is also home to major cultural institutions. The Australian Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and National Maritime Museum are only a few examples. Sydney hosts five major universities, attracting students and researchers alike.
The University
Located in the Kensington area of Sydney, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has an international reputation for teaching and research. UNSW consistently receives the largest allocation of government research funds and has strong programs across the curriculum with particular strengths in management, Asian studies, and languages. UNSW has over 40,000 students, including approximately 9,000 international students. The result is a diverse and interesting campus environment.
The Program
As one of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight schools, UNSW offers excellent curricula in Arts, Sciences, and Business. Student services provided by UNSW enable BC students to integrate easily into the Australian university system and to live and study alongside their Australian counterparts.
Orientation/Academic support
Upon arrival, BC students participate in a comprehensive university-sponsored orientation program. The Study Abroad office provides personal and academic counseling.
Housing
Like 80% of UNSW students, BC students typically live off campus in university-sponsored housing, sharing apartments in beachside suburbs within walking distance of the university. Students may also apply to on-campus residential colleges that offer tutorials and club activities.
Activities
In addition to the more than 40 sports clubs available, UNSW offers clubs sponsored by the Student Guild ranging from scuba diving, hang gliding, and sailing to traditional rugby and cricket.
Internship opportunities
Credit-bearing internship programs are available in marketing, political science, social science and policy, media studies, biological and environmental sciences, and business.
