Downloading and Installing Sophos Anti-Virus

Students

Students can download Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition directly from Sophos.


Faculty and Staff

Pre-installation (faculty & staff only)

  1. Print this page (or save it as a PDF) for reference.
  2. Download Sophos Anti-Virus to your Desktop. When prompted, enter your BC username and password. Save the Boston College Sophos 7 installation file to your desktop. Do not open the file at this time.
  3. Quit any open applications.

Note: You will need to remove any existing anti-virus software, such as Norton or McAfee, before installing the BC Sophos software. If you need assistance uninstalling your existing anti-virus software, please contact the Help Center at ext. 2-HELP (617-552-4357) or help.center@bc.edu.

note: This software should take no more than 5 minutes to install.


Installing Sophos Anti-Virus (faculty & staff only)

  1. Double-click the Boston College Sophos 7 installation file on your desktop.
    The disk image will expand and display the installer in a window.
  2. Double-click the Sophos Anti-Virus installation package, Boston College Sophos 7 (see Figure 1).

  3. Click Continue when notified that the “package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed” (see Figure 2).

  4. Click Continue on the Introduction screen.
  5. Select your hard drive, then click Continue on the Destination Select screen to install the software on your hard drive (see Figure 3). Note that the amount of space the software requires to install on your computer, may be different from what is shown in Figure 3.

  6. Click Install to install the software with default options.
  7. Enter your Mac username and password when prompted then click OK.

    A bar will appear showing the progress of your installation. (see Figure 4).

  8. Click Close on the Summary screen when is says Install Succeeded.
  9. Restart your computer.

After installation (faculty & staff only)

  1. Reconnect your computer to the Internet.
  2. Drag the Boston College Sophos 7 and SAV OS X icons to the Trash.
  3. Click the Sophos shield icon in the menu bar and choose Update Now to immediately download and install the software's virus definitions.
