Getting Started with WebMail
Summary:  Learn a little about WebMail and how to get started using it.

WebMail is Boston College's Web-based email application. Using WebMail, you can send and receive your BC email from any computer connected to the Internet. Open a Web browser and go to: New Window mail.bc.edu

Learn about some commonly used features of WebMail:

Creating new contacts (Address books)

In WebMail, you can save email addresses in your Contacts folder. Currently, you can only have one address book. Information Technology Services (ITS) is looking to expand this option to allow multiple address books in the near future.

To create a new contact:

  1. From the left navigation of WebMail, above Folders, click Add Contact (refer to Figure 1).

  2. Enter all the information you want on the Add a New Contact page, then click Save: Save contact button.
  3. To see your new contact: From the left navigation, under Folders, click the folder named Contacts (refer to Figure 2).

  4. Your new contact now appears on the Contacts page (refer to Figure 3).

Changing your "from" address

The "from" address is what someone sees in the "from" address when you send them an email.

To change your "from" address:

  1. In the upper-right of WebMail, click Preferences.
  2. Click General Preferences (refer to Figure 4).

  3. Scroll down to the Composing Options heading.
  4. In the From Address box, enter your name and BC email address, then click Update (refer to Figure 5).

Automatically replying to messages when you are away from email

If you are going to be away for an extended period of time, you may want to do something to help manage your email. You can set up an automatic reply to all of your incoming email, letting people know that you are temporarily away from email.

To set up your auto reply message:

  1. In the upper-right of WebMail, click Preferences.
  2. Follow Steps 3-7 on this page.

Forwarding your BC email to another email address

You can automatically forward all of your BC email to another email address. This feature is useful when you have more than one email account at BC and you want to make sure that your email is sent to the account that you use the most.

To set up email forwarding:

  1. In the upper-right of WebMail, click Preferences.
  2. Follow Steps 3-8 on this page.

Setting the number of messages you view at a time

If you want to view more or less than 20 messages on a page at a time, you can set that number in your preferences.

To set the number of messages you view at a time:

  1. In the upper-right of WebMail, click Preferences.
  2. Click General Preferences (refer to Figure 4 above).
  3. From the Display drop-down list, select the number of messages you want to view at a time (refer to Figure 6).

Turning on Spam filter

A new Spam Control service is now available for your BC email. Once you turn on the Spam Control service, a Junk folder is created for you, and then suspected spam is automatically put into this Junk folder.

To turn on the spam filter:

  1. In the upper-right of WebMail, click Preferences.
  2. Follow Steps 3-5 on this page.

Deleting a folder

To delete a folder:

  1. From the left navigation, under Folders, click the folder you want to delete (refer to Figure 7).

  2. Click Options: Options button

  3. Important: Make sure that you want to delete this folder and all subfolders. Once you delete a folder, you cannot undelete the folder!

  4. Click Delete to delete this folder and all subfolders (refer to Figure 8).

  5. From the left navigation of WebMail, next to Folders, click Folder refresh button to refresh your folder list (refer to Figure 9).
