Issue with Virex 7.7 AutoUpdate

There is a problem with the AutoUpdate function ofVirex 7.7, the Anti-virus software used on Macs at Boston College. ITS is aware of this problem and is currently working with McAfee, the manufacturer of Virex, to resolve it. This page will be updated as new information and solutions are available. In the meantime, please manually update your virus protection following the below instructions. New viruses are constantly being created, so it's important for your computer's security that you stay up-to-date.

Is your Virex Anti-Virus Protection Current?

Some users have received alerts saying that their AutoUpdate failed (refer to Figure 1). Others may not receive notification, but are behind in their virus definitions. Learn how to update your protection manually and verify that your virus protection is up-to-date below.

To manually update your virus protection:

  1. Click here to download the latest Virex virus update (also called a dat file.)
  2. You'll be asked to authenticate by entering your BC username and password.
  3. The dat will download to your desktop.
    Note: If you receive this warning message (refer to Figure 2), click Download.

  4. On your desktop, double click on the downloaded file with the extention ".pkg"
  5. The Virex Update Installer window will open. Click Continue.
  6. The Read Me screen contains information about Virex and the virus update you are installing. Click Continue.
  7. By default, the Select Destination screen will point to install the update on your hard drive. Click Continue.
  8. At the Installation Type screen, click Install. You will be asked to type the password you use to log on to your Mac.
  9. When the software is successfully installed, click Close.

 

To verify that your virus protection is up-to-date:

  1. Open Virex (located on your hard drive in the Applications folder.)
  2. On the application menu at the top of your screen, select Virex, then About Virex. (Refer to Figure 3.) This will display the creation date of the dat.(Refer to Figure 4.)

Important: New virus definitions are created every few weeks. Check back periodically for updates.
