Scanning your computer or a disk for viruses using McAfee Virex 7.7

Summary:  Learn how to scan your computer or a disk (floppy or Zip) for viruses using McAfee Virex 7.7 on your Mac OS X (Tiger, Panther & Jaguar) computer.

There is a known problem with the eUpdate function of Virex 7.7. ITS is aware of this problem and is currently working with McAfee, the manufacturer of Virex, to resolve it. Learn more about this issue & how to manually update your virus protection.

Note: The initial scan of your computer may take a long time to complete.

To scan your computer or a disk (floppy or Zip) for viruses using McAfee Virex 7.7:

  1. Open Virex (located on your hard drive in the Applications folder): Virex icon
    The Virex window appears (refer to Figure 1):

  2. If you want to scan a disk, insert the disk into the proper drive slot.

  3. Do one of the following (refer to Figure 2):
    • Click the window, then select the hard drive, zip, or floppy disk you want to scan.
      - OR -
    • Drag the hard drive, zip, or floppy disk you want to scan onto the Virex window.

  4. Click Start.

  5. Virex informs you when it is complete (refer to Figure 3). You may have to repair more than one file.
    Important: Some viruses can damage files so that they are unusable. In this instance, your file is already beyond repair. Virex disinfects the file, but may not be able to save it.   6. If necessary, repeat Steps 2-5 for other drives or disks.
