Downloading and installing McAfee Virex or VirusScan
software
Macintosh OS 9 and OS X (Tiger, Panther & Jaguar)
There is a known problem with the eUpdate function
of Virex 7.7 for Mac OS X with PowerPC processors. ITS is aware of
this problem and is currently working with McAfee, the manufacturer of Virex,
to resolve it. Learn more
about this issue & how to manually update your virus protection.
Notes:
- Virex and VirusScan detect not only Macintosh-specific viruses, but
also Windows-based viruses and UNIX-based viruses.
- BC faculty, staff, and students can use McAfee virus protection at home.
Use the instructions below to download and install it on your home computer.
To download and install McAfee Virex or VirusScan software:
- For OS X with Intel:
Download
McAfee VirusScan 8.0i for MacIntel now (File size: 15.9 MB).
For OS X with PowerPC:
Download
McAfee Virex 7.7 for Mac OS X PowerPC now (File size: 45 MB).
For OS 9:
Download
McAfee Virex 6.1 for Mac OS 9 now (File size: 9.15 MB).
- When prompted, enter your BC username and password.
- Save the file on your desktop.
- Double-click the file you just downloaded to install it.
For OS X with PowerPC: Stuffit-Expander automatically expands
the file into a folder called Virex for OS X.
- For OS X with PowerPC: Double-click the Virex
for OS X folder to open it. Then, double-click the Virex
7.7.pkg icon to begin installation.
OS X users are prompted to authenticate with the Name and Password used
to sign in to your computer.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install McAfee Virex or VirusScan software
on your computer.
Note: Toward the end of the installation process, System Optimization may
take a while.
- You can now delete the McAfee Virex or VirusScan software installer
file from your desktop.
- Go to
http://www.bc.edu/virus
to update your virus definitions (DAT files) to the most recent.
