Downloading and installing McAfee Virex or VirusScan software
Macintosh OS 9 and OS X (Tiger, Panther & Jaguar)
Summary:  Learn how to download and install McAfee Virex or VirusScan software for your Macintosh computer. Also, use these procedures to download and install upgrades to your McAfee Virex or VirusScan software.

There is a known problem with the eUpdate function of Virex 7.7 for Mac OS X with PowerPC processors. ITS is aware of this problem and is currently working with McAfee, the manufacturer of Virex, to resolve it. Learn more about this issue & how to manually update your virus protection.

Notes:

To download and install McAfee Virex or VirusScan software:

  1. For OS X with Intel: New Window Download McAfee VirusScan 8.0i for MacIntel now (File size: 15.9 MB).
    For OS X with PowerPC: New Window Download McAfee Virex 7.7 for Mac OS X PowerPC now (File size: 45 MB).
    For OS 9: New Window Download McAfee Virex 6.1 for Mac OS 9 now (File size: 9.15 MB).

  2. When prompted, enter your BC username and password.

  3. Save the file on your desktop.

  4. Double-click the file you just downloaded to install it.
    For OS X with PowerPC: Stuffit-Expander automatically expands the file into a folder called Virex for OS X.

  5. For OS X with PowerPC: Double-click the Virex for OS X folder to open it. Then, double-click the Virex 7.7.pkg icon to begin installation.
    OS X users are prompted to authenticate with the Name and Password used to sign in to your computer.

  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to install McAfee Virex or VirusScan software on your computer.
    Note: Toward the end of the installation process, System Optimization may take a while.

  7. You can now delete the McAfee Virex or VirusScan software installer file from your desktop.

  8. Go to New Window http://www.bc.edu/virus to update your virus definitions (DAT files) to the most recent.
