Beware of Email Scams

An Important Warning for all BC Community Members:

A few members of the BC community have been victims of some scams going around via email, resulting in their own loss of up to $1000. Therefore, we wanted to remind you not to purchase goods advertised to you over email or the Internet from unknown sources.

You may receive emails from outside sales companies who claim they have negotiated a special deal for Boston College faculty, staff, and students on computers, software, cigarettes, off-campus storage, or any variety of items. BC does not distribute BC email addresses to outside sales companies – these companies are sending you SPAM.

Never purchase goods from these vendors. Special offers for BC Community members to purchase products would be posted within the official www.bc.edu web site, and emails about them would come from known contacts on campus. In general, the legitimacy of any BC special deal advertised through email, should be confirmed with the originator of the email, who should be a BC contact with an "@bc.edu" email address and a phone number that begins with the campus exchange, 552.

Unfortunately, the "from" address on email can be edited to appear to be from an @bc.edu address when it actually is not - so again, please be sure to confirm any offers.
